About the Graphic Artist

David Daniel Blank, Evergreen's talented graphic artist, created each chapter image, the book's redwood cover and gold-leaf symbols. He lives in Emmaus, PA.  Dave has worked as a graphic artist for large and small companies over the past ten years. He began his work on Evergreen in 2001 when, after reading the first chapter, he created the compelling image that represents "Journey into Ontawa."  Enjoy viewing his work!
Journey into Ontawa (CH1) Journey into Ontawa (Chapter One)

What if a spine-tingling, family-guarded, story you learned as a child about a once-in-a-thousand year awakening of a great cosmic force was about to unfold deep within a region known only as "the forbidden caves?" Would you risk your life to seek the truth? In this first chapter we meet Niles Jaden III, a keen, well-respected member of the City of Jaden's founding family, learn why he's left all creature comforts behind, and share his experiences in Ontawa as this fateful journey begins.

Trance of the Purple Berries (CH2) Trance of the Purple Berries (Chapter Two)

During his travels into the dark, watery underworld, Niles befriends a colorful, yet primitive, creature who dates back to the City of Jaden's pre-history. During one of their lively encounters along the way, Niles eats several special berries offered by his new friend. In Chapter Two Niles goes back nearly one-half century to revisit his dear grandmother, Nanna Jaden -- a powerful family matriarch -- and reveal the dark, secretive story he loved to fear as a child.

The Golem (CH3) The Golem (Chapter Three)

At the heart of the story is a soul-stirring encounter with the Golem within the forbidden caves. The Golem awakens one lunar cycle before the dawn of Kaleija -- a cosmic, millennial event that occurs when Evergreen's two suns align perfectly with its crystalline moon. In Chapter Three we experience the Golem's awakening and learn the horrific reasons why all animates should fear for their future. Hope is given when the Golem offers an enchanted gift and a prophecy to those in attendance.

Flight of the Chrysalis: Part I CH4) Flight of the Chrysalis: Part I (Chapter Four)

Golem's prophecy foretells the need for "three worlds to combine into one" before balance will return to the land. An essential element of this spirited vision is an immense chrysalis named Gaia ("Guy-ah") offered by the Golem. In Chapter Four we now accompany Gaia and her colorful escorts on this unforgettable journey. We share her fears when confronted by vicious marauders, discover her extraordinary powers triggered by the incivility of each new foe, and meet Syrus -- the monstrous ruler of all winged carnivores.

Visitors atop Mesequoya (CH5) Visitors atop Mesequoya (Chapter Five)

Chapter Five introduces the modern City of Jaden (350 A.D.J.) built on top of a ten-mile wide ancient redwood stump -- named "Mesequoya" by the natives one hundred centuries ago. We meet scientist Dr. Terre Bristol-Lane, her fun-loving family and their incorrigible pet chuckachu named "Wysiwyg," and sinister uber-capitalist Thorstein Darkminster Forge (a.k.a., "Thor") -- the city's de facto leader in the absence of Niles Jaden III.

Dratch and Gribble Memorial Park and Railroad Station (CH6) Dratch and Gribble Memorial Park and Railroad Station (Chapter Six)

On their way to the town of Bristlecone, Terre's children and Wysiwyg enter a dark, eery park named after a terrible tragedy that occurred over a century ago. So many lives were lost that visitors often report hearing the prolonged cries of pain and grief in the ravine beneath the stretch of track that memorializes the horrible event. In Chapter Six the children are confronted with the stark reality of these terrifying rumors. How will they escape this frightening ordeal?

Project AiCORN (CH7) Project AiCORN (Chapter Seven)

Dr. Terre Bristol-Lane works at the Scripps Science Center, a division of Forge Enterprises. Terre directs Project AiCORN, an innovative bio-engineering program that integrates artificial intelligence (Ai) technology into computers. In Chapter Seven we discover the danger inherent in her project. When Terre learns of Thor's drive to place Project AiCORN technology in his city-wide rail system, she decides to take matters into her own hands.

The Knickknackery at Bristlecone (CH8) The Knickknackery at Bristlecone (Chapter Eight)

Quigley ("Q") Cumberpatch, proprietor of "The Knickknackery," has created unique toys for the children of Jaden most of his life. In Chapter Eight, together with Terre's children and Wysiwyg, we learn of Quigley's troubling concerns about how and why the City of Jaden has changed in the name of progress but not for the better and explore his futuristic solution to the problem -- a multi-dimensional mode of transportation called SkyRails.

Arrival of the Most WANTED (CH9) Arrival of the Most WANTED (Chapter Nine)

Chapter Nine takes us backstage at the Knick- knackery with Quigley, the Bristol-Lane children, Wysiwyg and the sudden appearance of Terre-- outlaw scientist and mother of three. As Thor's broadcast network defines how the public will see the "heinous crimes" committed at the lab and the justice she can expect when caught, we learn why Terre destroyed her life's work through her own principled eyes. We also find that Terre and Quigley share a passion to turn their dreams into realities.

Birth of Project AiTOM (CH10) Birth of Project AiTOM (Chapter Ten)

Now that Terre must prove her innocence to all of Thor's charges, how can she continue Project AiCORN after all project data and her lab were destroyed? What is Project AiTOM and can it be finished before Thor launches his rail lines upgraded with perilous AI technology? In Chapter Ten we learn of Quigley's cynicism about such an undertaking, see the logic underlying Project AiTOM, and discover why Terre earned her reputation as a brilliant scientist.

Flight of the Chrysalis: Part II (CH11) Flight of the Chrysalis: Part II (Chapter Eleven)

In Chapter Eleven, as Gaia's journey continues, your mind will be stretched in unimaginable ways. Gaia and her companions now must penetrate the Great Falls to travel beneath Lake Augur to an underworld of iridescent plants and bustling insects called Kwak'walans. We meet Grog and Merton, who accompany Gaia to her final destination and experience an unearthly celebration of sight and sound before the Golem's enchanted gift emerges from her chrysalis to continue her incredible journey.

Battle Beneath Lake Augur (CH12) Battle Beneath Lake Augur (Chapter Twelve)

In an apocalyptic climax to this first volume, we witness Syrus and his massive army penetrate the Great Falls in a crusade to eliminate Gaia and those who have protected her. But things aren't what they seem for the Ruler of all winged carnivores, as Syrus discovers the cold, blackened remains of Gaia's lifeless cocoon. Will the Kwak'walans survive the carnage? Will Syrus' reign be preserved? And what will happen to the Golem's prophecy and the dire predictions that are about to unfold across the land?
